How our puppies are raised
About the prior litter of puppies:
Mom gave birth to seven American cocker spaniel puppies in Sarasota, Florida. Mom and puppies had privacy from the other dogs in the house, yet mom had free access to go in and out as she pleased. From the time they were born, they were handled regularly, which included early neurological stimulation, and were noise desensitized. Tails were docked at 2 days old. Weaned at their mom's pace, they were fed grain-free* dog food. During the first 10 weeks, they were also fed human grade turkey. (That's right, I oven cooked whole turkeys just for these puppies and their mom!) They quickly started escaping their den and began to explore. They had access to most of the house and fenced backyard, using a doggie door from the time they were old enough to figure out how to follow the other adult dogs in the house. Their siblings, mom, and the other adult dogs taught them bite inhibition, dog-etiquette, and play(when the adults are up to their puppy-antics!). At 2 weeks old, regular deworming began to ensure the best nutrition absorption and health. They got regular baths and nail trims, as well as exposed to a clipper and mini-grooming sessions. Puppies were blown dry by hand using a comb and slicker brush on a grooming table.
I feel socialization is the most important thing in a cocker spaniel puppy's development. At just 3 weeks of age, they started visiting park playgrounds to be exposed to new smells, sounds, and sights. People of all ages from toddlers to seniors enjoyed petting and holding the cocker spaniel puppies as they grew. Once they got their shots from a licensed veterinarian, they got to walk around on their own feet and gain confidence in new situations on park outings at least twice a week.
For the puppies that stayed longer, they were socialized 2-4 days a week for 4-6 hours each day. They learned to walk on a leash and became experts at greeting people. In busy downtown Sarasota, they navigated heavy Marina Jack restaurant and Sarasota Opera House intermission crowds and various outdoor dining areas with ease. At the waterfront park, they learned about sea water, surf, and swimming. Loud bag pipes, drums, and other live music were heard. Besides tile and grass, the puppies walked on wobbly floating docks, noisy cold metal ramps, stairs, seashell gravel, coated concrete public restroom floors, drain grates, and mulch. At the playground, they learned how kids play with puppies on leash with lots of noise, tugging, rough handling, and being picked up awkwardly.
While little, they used custom litter boxes in the den, graduating to pads outside the den, and later crate training overnight began in the bedroom. They hold it all night now and are ready for their new homes. (Note: These puppies were sold.)
The current puppies were socialized 2-4 days a week for 3-6 hours until 20 weeks old and for crowd exposure some greeted departing LeBarge cruise passengers while some visited a local elementary school during active times. They had access to a water filled kiddie pool which some played in multiple times and all were taught to sit to be rewarded.
* Future litters will be fed a different diet.
